Warm summer day in Venizia

May Thirtieth, 2012 –

Today started out as an early morning once again, but it was awesome weather and quite beautiful outside.  We were told last night that we had to wear pants and professional attire to Insula, which is a publics works company in Venice.  This company is in charge of keeping the streets and canals of Venice safe and in working order.  They gave us a presentation on their works and some of the things they did.  One of the coolest things that they talked about was their ability to use mapping and the use of computers to track everything and specifically where an incident had occurred, who made the report, and when it was fixed and how long.  This was good for both the city and the shopkeepers because when a worker would come to fix the stone or damage they would know before hand.  This was key in that they could shut the store down and not have to deal with trying to work around the construction work and the pedestrians.

Once our meeting with Insula was over we went right next door to a grocery store and purchased some items for lunch.  I bought a whole chicken and a Heineken all for very cheap.  We walked just a short bit to a spot that we could sit down and began to indulge.  This was a very good meal, but quite messy since I could only eat with my fingers.

After lunch we walked back to the hotel and I took a quick shower since Insula was not air-conditioned either.  After my shower a few guys and I went back out to wander the streets of Venice.  During this time we viewed some of the shops and then found a small place that claimed to be Venice’s first pizzeria.  Our main concern was finding somewhere to sit and just chill out for a little, but drinks were definitely a plus.

I took it easy tonight in order to catch up on some much needed sleep.
