Amsterdam and free days

June Sixth - Tenth, 2012 -

This portion of my blog is going to cover the late afternoon of the 6th through the Tenth late afternoon.  Once we got in to Amsterdam we had to get on a short train ride to Amsterdam Central Station and after that we just started walking right to the hostel.  As our walk began we saw literally hundreds and hundreds of bicycles all along the streets just lined up.  Also an old man who was trying to get some money tried helping us to find our hostel, which ended up helping a little and was no money out of my pocket.  Once we got settled in to the Bulldog Hotel "hostel" we were pretty much 2 to a room full of 10 total people.  This was quite an experience since I hadn't stayed in a place like this except at camp when I was younger.  All was well and we met back up downstairs to explore the town.

Each day we would wake up and shower then either just start walking around and exploring with your buddy or as a group we would meet up and start walking.  The streets, canals, and parks are pretty awesome here.  I couldn't believe at actually how similar Amsterdam is to Venice with the canals.

Pretty much right around the corner from our hotel was the "red light district", which was pretty interesting with all of the characters and girls that were there.  I would have to say even just walking the streets was a pretty unique experience in its own.  My favorite part of Amsterdam was definitely getting to tour the Heineken Brewery.  This was a pretty awesome place and they "taught" you how to properly drink a Heineken and how it was made, minus a few pertinent details.  Also they gave you tokens for free beer at the end of the tour and a token for a free gift.  The gift that they said was at the end of the tour was actually a short boat ride away, which ended up being worth it since it was technically free and on the water.  The free gift ended up being either a picture of yourself looking like you were on a magazine or some sunglasses, I think pretty much everyone went for the sunglasses.

Another pretty cool thing was that there was a volleyball tournament going on down the street, which wasn't even a 5 minute walk.  I thought that was weird being right in the middle of the area and it being a little chilly, but they looked like they were having a good time.

At the end of our time in Amsterdam we left Saturday night to get on a night train to Munich, Germany.  This train ride was about 10 hours, but this time we upgraded and got 3 person coaches.  These were definitely better in the fact that they had air conditioning, but they were still a pretty tight squeeze.  Once the train started rolling Tucker, Jordan, and I started watching Workaholics on Jordan's computer and then literally after one episode we folded the beds back out and went to sleep.  I did not wake up till the next morning at 6:30 when the train lady came by with breakfast.

Now that were in Munich we arrived at 7:10 and got off the train and set out to look for our hotel.  Little did we know our hotel was something like 6 Kilometers from the train station and we had our bags with us and it was pouring down rain.  Just for those of you who may not of been to Munich/Germany, when it rains it pours.  Literally these were some of the heaviest and fattest rain drops I had seen in a while.  Well we finally made it to the Leonardo Hotel in Munich and got our rooms and settled in.  The plan was for everyone to meet at 5:00 at the hotel and then go to the Haufbrau House.  Unfortunately here in Munich everything on Sunday's is closed, so I started doing laundry downstairs and they lasted for an hour for wash and dry...

Even though I missed the first trip Tanner and I ended up meeting everyone in Marien Platz right next to the Haufbrau.  After this we hung out a little longer and then went home to get ready for the bike ride in the morning.
